Monroe, NC – Deputies in Monroe rescued a domestic rabbit inside the jail fence Monday night, prompting shelter care.
According to the Union County Sheriff’s Office, members of the Adam Squad were conducting a routine perimeter check at the Union County Detention Center when they spotted a small rabbit just inside the secured fencing.
Authorities said the rabbit appeared domesticated and ran toward a nearby dumpster as deputies approached, briefly avoiding capture. With a shift change approaching, officers coordinated efforts to safely contain the animal by limiting its escape routes along the fence line.
The sheriff’s office said deputies were able to retrieve the rabbit without injury.
Recognizing that the animal was not wild, deputies created a temporary enclosure using a box, sheets and food to keep it comfortable until the local animal shelter opened. The rabbit — later nicknamed “Mr. Fluffers” — was then transported for care.
Officials said anyone who recently lost a bunny can contact the shelter to claim it. If no owner comes forward in the coming days, the rabbit will be placed for adoption.
The lighthearted rescue drew attention from local residents on social media, including students and young families.
The sheriff’s office did not report any security disruptions related to the incident.
