Trenton, NY – A two-vehicle crash on Route 12 injured three people Sunday night, prompting an investigation by the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office.
According to Oneida County Sheriff Robert M. Maciol, deputies responded around 8:20 p.m. to Route 12 near Route 28 in the Town of Trenton for a reported personal injury crash involving a marked patrol vehicle.
Authorities said Deputy Zachary Held, 23, had been conducting stationary traffic enforcement and was parked in a lot off the west side of Route 12, facing south. Deputies said Held entered the roadway to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling northbound when his marked 2025 Ford Explorer allegedly collided with a 2015 Honda Civic.
Investigators identified the Honda’s driver as Mariah Depan, 20, of New York Mills, who was traveling southbound at the time of the crash. Deputies said both vehicles sustained damage.
Depan was transported by ambulance to Wynn Hospital with complaints of pain. Her passenger, Jace Diehl, 22, also of New York Mills, and Deputy Held were evaluated at the scene by EMS and later released, according to authorities.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
The crash remains under investigation by the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office. The New York State Police, Barneveld Fire Department and Northstar Ambulance assisted at the scene.
The Route 12 corridor is frequently traveled by students and commuters between Utica and northern Oneida County.
