SEATTLE — As spring routines shift across Seattle and surrounding communities, Washington health officials are urging residents to pay attention to a condition that often develops without warning: high blood pressure.

Often referred to as the “silent killer,” high blood pressure rarely causes noticeable symptoms while significantly increasing the risk of heart attack, stroke and kidney disease. Health experts warn that seasonal transitions — including changes in physical activity, diet, stress levels and sleep patterns — can quietly influence blood pressure numbers.

“Most people assume they would feel it if something was wrong,” officials say. “With hypertension, that’s typically not how it works.”

Nearly half of U.S. adults live with high blood pressure, and many do not know they have it. In Washington, cardiovascular disease remains a significant public health concern, particularly in both urban and suburban communities where daily stress and routine changes can compound risk.

Spring in Seattle brings longer daylight hours, fluctuating temperatures and shifting daily schedules. Some residents increase outdoor activity, while others experience disrupted sleep, travel or heightened stress. Doctors emphasize there is no reliable way to detect high blood pressure without measuring it. Readings of 180/120 or higher, especially when accompanied by chest pain, shortness of breath, vision changes or weakness, require immediate medical attention.

Health officials encourage Seattle residents to use the seasonal transition as a reminder to check their blood pressure and consult a healthcare provider about recommended screening.
