Rensselaer, Indiana – A Sunday morning crash at a Jasper County intersection killed one driver and shut down traffic for hours.
According to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called at approximately 8:54 a.m. CST to a motor vehicle crash at State Road 110 and U.S. Highway 231. Investigators said a 2015 white Ford F-250 was eastbound on State Road 110 and had entered the fully marked four-way stop intersection when it was struck by a southbound semi-tractor trailer traveling on U.S. 231.
The pickup truck was operated by 46-year-old David Stahl of DeMotte. The semi was driven by 71-year-old Miles Williams, also of DeMotte.
Evidence collected at the scene and witness statements indicated Williams allegedly failed to stop for the posted stop sign and flashing red lights before entering the intersection. After the collision, the semi-tractor trailer left the east side of the roadway and struck a NIPSCO utility pole.
Stahl was airlifted from the scene by Lutheran Air to Christ Advocate Hospital in Oak Lawn, Illinois, for medical treatment. He later died from his injuries. Williams was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to investigators.
Authorities reported airbags deployed in Stahl’s vehicle and that he was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. There was no airbag deployment in the semi-tractor trailer, and investigators said Williams was not wearing a seat belt.
As a result of the crash, the roadway remained closed for approximately five hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.
Responding agencies included the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, Indiana State Police, Jasper County Coroner’s Office, Keener Township Fire Department and Medics, Wheattfield Ambulance Service, Hebron Fire Department, DeMotte Police Department, NIPSCO, Jasper County REMC, and Cheever’s Towing.
The intersection is frequently used by commuters traveling between DeMotte and Rensselaer.
The crash remains under investigation.
