Chicago, Illinois – An Illinois State Police squad car was struck on Illinois 53 early Saturday, prompting an ongoing hit-and-run investigation.

According to Illinois State Police, the crash occurred around 3:46 a.m. Saturday while an ISP trooper was stopped on the right shoulder of northbound Illinois 53 near Algonquin Road, assisting a stranded motorist with emergency lights activated.

State police said a black Dodge Ram pickup allegedly failed to slow down and struck the rear driver’s side of the stationary squad car with the front right of the pickup. The Dodge then continued northbound on Illinois 53 for approximately 200 yards before stopping due to damage sustained in the crash.

Police said the driver of the Dodge then fled the scene. The trooper and the driver of the other involved vehicle were both outside their vehicles at the time of the crash. No injuries were reported, according to ISP.

The incident marks the third Move Over Law-related crash involving Illinois State Police in 2026, state officials said. In 2025, ISP reported 14 Move Over Law-related crashes, resulting in injuries to seven troopers. In 2024, police recorded 12 such crashes, including one fatality.

Illinois’ Move Over Law, also known as Scott’s Law, requires drivers to move over or slow down when approaching emergency or disabled vehicles displaying emergency or hazard lights.

Violations carry fines ranging from $250 to $10,000 for a first offense. If a violation results in injury, a driver’s license suspension of six months to two years is mandatory.

The investigation remains ongoing.

The crash occurred during early-morning hours when traffic volumes are lower, a time often used by overnight workers and commuters.
