Burleigh County, N.D. – A head-on crash on Highway 83 in Burleigh County Sunday morning killed two drivers and closed northbound lanes for two hours.

According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at 10:26 a.m. near mile marker 105, approximately six miles south of Wilton, in the northbound lanes of Highway 83. Investigators said wet roads and dense fog limited visibility to about 100 yards at the time of the collision.

Authorities said a 2021 GMC Acadia was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes when it struck a northbound 2016 Nissan Maxima head-on. The crash involved two vehicles and resulted in fatal injuries to both drivers.

The driver of the GMC Acadia was identified as an 80-year-old woman from Williston. Troopers said she was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. The driver of the Nissan Maxima was a 21-year-old woman from Bismarck, who was not wearing a seat belt, according to the Highway Patrol.

Both drivers were transported to Sanford Medical Center in Bismarck, where they were pronounced deceased due to injuries sustained in the crash.

Northbound lanes of Highway 83 were closed to non-residential traffic from the junction of Highway 1804/71st Avenue Northeast to Wilton between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. as emergency crews responded and investigators documented the scene.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol was assisted by the Burleigh County Sheriff’s Office, Wilton Ambulance, and Wilton Fire and Rescue.

The crash remains under investigation by the North Dakota Highway Patrol. No additional information has been released.

The closure and foggy conditions impacted late-morning travel for commuters and students heading toward Wilton and Bismarck.
