Peoria, IL – A Peoria County Sheriff’s deputy is in stable condition after being shot multiple times during a traffic stop in South Peoria on Saturday night, according to the Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office.

According to State’s Attorney Jodi M. Hoos, 51-year-old Larry D. Bell has been charged with Attempted First-Degree Murder, Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, Armed Violence, and multiple drug and firearm-related felonies following the incident.

Authorities say the shooting occurred around 9:50 p.m. on January 31 in the 1000 block of South Western Avenue. The deputy was conducting a traffic stop when Bell allegedly exited the vehicle, fled on foot, and fired several rounds, striking the deputy multiple times.

Hours later, officers with the Peoria Police Department located Bell hiding in an abandoned building, where he was found with 25 grams of methamphetamine. A handgun was also recovered at the scene.

Prosecutors have filed a Petition to Detain Bell, with a court hearing scheduled for Wednesday.

The Peoria County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the deputy remains in stable condition and thanked local agencies for their “swift collaboration” in making the arrest.

Anyone with information related to the shooting is urged to contact the Peoria Police Department at 309-673-4521.
