Ann Arbor, MI – An 18-year-old Ann Arbor man accused of making violent threats toward Haisley Elementary School has been arraigned and remains jailed as the case moves forward, according to the Ann Arbor Police Department.
According to police, the suspect was taken into custody Tuesday morning following an investigation into threats allegedly made on Thursday, January 16, as students were being dismissed from Haisley Elementary School in Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County. Authorities said the threats involved harm to people using a firearm.
Police identified the suspect as Jules Khalfoun, 18, of Ann Arbor. He was arraigned Tuesday afternoon in 14A-1 District Court on two felony counts: Making Terrorist Threats and Intentional Threat to Commit an Act of Violence Against a School, School Employees, or Students.
The court set a $250,000 cash/surety bond. If released, Khalfoun would be required to wear a GPS location-tracking tether. Additional bond conditions include no possession of weapons, no alcohol use, no criminal activity, no travel outside Michigan, and no presence on any Ann Arbor Public Schools property or events. He is also prohibited from contacting any Ann Arbor Public Schools employees.
Police said Khalfoun remains lodged at the Washtenaw County Jail. A probable cause hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, February 5, at 9 a.m.
Investigators previously searched the suspect’s residence and reported that no firearms were found. Authorities also worked with Community Mental Health to coordinate immediate treatment, and police confirmed the suspect was receiving care at a medical facility at the time of the initial investigation.
Ann Arbor Police and Ann Arbor Public Schools said safety plans were implemented following the incident. Investigators stated the suspect is believed to be the sole individual responsible.
