Kansas City, MO – Drivers traveling Interstate 29 through the Northland should plan for ongoing delays starting today as lane and ramp closures begin for guardrail replacement work in Clay and Platte counties.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), crews will conduct guardrail operations along northbound I-29 from just south of Mexico City Avenue to U.S. 69. The project begins Wednesday and is expected to continue through Sunday, March 1, weather permitting.

MoDOT says motorists can expect daytime intermittent lane closures from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and overnight ramp and lane closures from 7 p.m. to 6:30 a.m., Monday through Friday. Traffic impacts will vary by location and date, with closures changing as work progresses.

Several ramps will be fully closed overnight on scheduled days, including:

  • NB I-29 ramps at Gateway Avenue, NW 64th Street, and NW 72nd Street
  • The NB I-635 to NB I-29 ramp, including a single-lane closure on the I-29 mainline
  • Lane reductions near the I-635 interchange and over NW 120th Street

Daytime impacts also include a single-lane ramp closure from NB I-29 to U.S. 152 early next week.

MoDOT advises drivers to slow down, remain alert, and expect short-term changes that may not be well-marked in advance. Work zones may shift quickly to accommodate repairs or debris removal.

Drivers commuting through Clay County, Platte County, and the greater Kansas City metro are encouraged to allow extra travel time and check for updates before heading out.
