Winnipeg, MB – Winnipeg police say five people have been arrested in connection with a series of extortion, arson, and theft incidents targeting local businesses this month, with two additional suspects now wanted on Canada-wide warrants.
According to the Winnipeg Police Service Major Crimes Unit, investigators began probing the cases in early July after multiple retail businesses reported suspicious fires, threats, and extortion demands. Police say the incidents occurred between Wednesday, July 16, and Wednesday, July 23, and were later determined to be connected.
Authorities report arsons at a warehouse in the 1300 block of Spruce Street and convenience stores along Selkirk Avenue. Investigators say several convenience stores were allegedly extorted for money in exchange for “protection” from arson, including locations on Main Street and Selkirk Avenue. A retail business on Portage Avenue also reported a theft of approximately $120 in merchandise.
Police say seven individuals were identified during the investigation. Five suspects have been arrested and face multiple charges, including extortion, arson, theft, and court-order violations. Two of the accused were released on undertakings, while three others remain in custody.
Among those charged is a 32-year-old Winnipeg woman facing two counts of extortion. A 33-year-old Winnipeg man was charged with extortion, disobeying court orders, and operating a motor vehicle while prohibited. Two Montreal men, aged 49 and 65, face several charges, including arson with disregard for human life and extortion. A 26-year-old man from Kitchener, Ontario, was also charged with extortion and remains in custody.
Canada-wide warrants have been issued for two additional suspects, aged 29 and 40, who are wanted for extortion- and arson-related conspiracy charges.
