Siskiyou County, CA – A routine traffic stop in Siskiyou County led to a major drug arrest this week after deputies discovered more than 1,300 pounds of illegally cultivated marijuana being transported through the Mount Shasta area.

According to the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrested 55-year-old Shel Saunders of Fort Bragg, California, after stopping a Sprinter van for a traffic violation. During the stop, investigators conducted a probable cause search when Saunders was unable to provide paperwork or licensing indicating the marijuana was legally grown or approved for sale on the regulated market.

Authorities say deputies found 74 large bags containing approximately 1,363 pounds of marijuana flower, along with $253,870 in U.S. currency inside the vehicle. Investigators believe the cash was connected to illegal marijuana sales.

During the search, deputies also located a .40-caliber Smith & Wesson handgun in the vehicle’s engine compartment, according to the sheriff’s office.

Saunders was arrested on charges related to the transportation and possession of marijuana for sale and was booked into the Siskiyou County Jail. The case remains under investigation.

Sheriff’s officials also issued a public safety reminder, warning that marijuana grown illegally in Siskiyou County is not subject to California’s regulated quality or safety standards. Authorities say illegal operations often use toxic banned pesticides, which can remain on the product even after harvesting and processing.

Residents are encouraged to ensure any cannabis products they consume are sourced legally through licensed retailers that comply with state regulations.
