Laurel, Delaware – A 50-year-old Laurel man has been arrested in connection with a series of thefts and property damage incidents targeting local churches earlier this month, according to Delaware State Police.

According to Delaware State Police, troopers first responded on January 6 to Saint Matthews First Baptist Church, located in the 32000 block of Wolfe Street in Laurel, after a report of theft. Investigators said an unknown suspect allegedly removed parts from the church’s air conditioning units.

A second incident was reported on January 22 at ELIM Delaware Church, located in the 33000 block of Sussex Boulevard, where troopers say similar damage and theft occurred. During the investigation, police also coordinated with the Laurel Police Department, which was investigating a related incident at a residence in the 100 block of East 5th Street within town limits.

Through investigative efforts, authorities identified Chad Wray, 50, of Laurel, as the suspect in the cases. Police obtained warrants and arrested Wray on January 23, charging him with multiple felony and misdemeanor offenses.

Wray was charged with six counts of felony theft $1,500 or greater, five counts of felony criminal mischief involving $5,000 or more in property damage, one count of criminal mischief under $5,000, second-degree criminal trespass, and third-degree criminal trespass.

Following his arrest, Wray was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 2 and released on a $23,600 unsecured bond, according to police.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities say additional charges are possible. Anyone with information related to the incidents is encouraged to contact Delaware State Police.
