Police say the driver initially pulled into a parking lot near South Street but fled after an object was reportedly thrown from the vehicle.
Authorities said the pursuit continued northbound on I-65 before exiting onto State Road 43, where the vehicle stopped near a Speedway gas station. Both occupants allegedly ran from the scene but were later located and taken into custody.
Police identified the driver as Dallas Garnett, 30, of East Chicago. Investigators allege Garnett was operating the vehicle while under the influence of a controlled substance and had active arrest warrants from Porter and Lake counties. Troopers also reported that suspected marijuana was thrown from the vehicle during the pursuit.
Garnett faces multiple preliminary charges, including resisting law enforcement with a vehicle (Level 5 felony), operating while intoxicated – prior (Level 6 felony), criminal recklessness, and additional misdemeanor counts related to impaired and aggressive driving, license suspension, and drug possession.
The passenger, Larry Harris, 28, of Portage, was also arrested and charged with obstruction of justice (Level 6 felony), resisting law enforcement, and possession of marijuana.
