Tampa, FL – A Hillsborough County man has been arrested after investigators say he intentionally poisoned his girlfriend’s dog, leading to the animal’s death.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, 22-year-old Edwin Campuzano was taken into custody on a charge of Aggravated Cruelty to Animals following an investigation that began last year.
Detectives say that in May 2025, Campuzano allegedly poisoned his girlfriend’s 3-year-old Maltese Poodle, Milo, causing the dog to die from internal bleeding. Evidence collected during the investigation showed the poison was deliberately purchased and placed in the dog’s food.
After the incident was reported in December 2025, authorities gathered enough evidence to obtain an arrest warrant. Campuzano turned himself in on January 16, 2026.
The sheriff’s office confirmed Campuzano had previously served as a police officer with the Bartow Police Department, though he is no longer employed there.
“This was a cruel and deliberate act,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “At HCSO, we will always protect the most vulnerable, including animals, and we will hold people accountable no matter who they are or what position they hold.”
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office released a statement video honoring “Giselle,” a K-9, reaffirming its commitment to animal welfare and justice.
