Jefferson Township, Monroe County, WI – Drivers in western Wisconsin faced major disruptions Wednesday afternoon after a milk tanker rolled over on Highway 33 near Cashton, injuring the driver and forcing a lengthy road closure.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened around 3:40 p.m. Wednesday when a milk tanker traveling eastbound failed to negotiate a curve on Highway 33 in the Town of Jefferson, just west of Cashton. Authorities said the semi left the roadway, tipped over, and came to rest in a ditch.

The driver, a 22-year-old man from Florida, was injured and became trapped inside the vehicle. Officials said first responders from Cashton worked for more than an hour to safely extricate him from the wreckage. He was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. His name has not been released.

The rollover caused the tanker to spill approximately 3,000 gallons of milk and 100 gallons of diesel fuel. Containment efforts were quickly put in place to prevent the liquids from entering a nearby creek, according to officials.

The crash forced Highway 33 to close for more than two hours Wednesday as emergency crews managed the scene and addressed environmental concerns. Due to road conditions, officials delayed full recovery of the vehicle.

Authorities say Highway 33 will be partially closed starting around 1:00 p.m. Thursday while heavy equipment is used to remove the tanker.

Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including Monroe County 911 Communications, Monroe County Emergency Management, Cashton Police, Cashton First Responders, Cashton Fire Department, Tri-State Ambulance, and the Monroe County Highway Department.

Motorists are urged to plan alternate routes and expect delays.
