Orwell, VT – A Brandon man was arrested in Orwell Monday evening after allegedly being found passed out behind the wheel of a vehicle, according to the Addison County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy Mark Gutel said he was on patrol around 6:27 p.m. on October 13 when a “be-on-the-lookout” alert was issued for a driver reportedly unresponsive in a vehicle. Gutel located the car on Main Street in Orwell and conducted a traffic stop.

According to the sheriff’s office, the driver was identified as Adam Ellis, 33, of Brandon, Vermont. During the investigation, Deputy Gutel allegedly observed signs of impairment and placed Ellis under arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Ellis was transported to the Middlebury Police Department for DUI processing before being cited to appear in Addison County Superior Court on October 27, 2025, at 12:30 p.m. He was later released to a sober party.

Authorities thanked the Middlebury Police Department for assisting in the case. Officials noted that court times are subject to change and that all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
