Chemung County, NY – A Van Etten woman has been arrested after allegedly pointing what appeared to be a pistol at a driver on a town road earlier this week.

According to the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 8:44 p.m. on Wednesday, September 18, to a menacing complaint near Langford Creek Road and Blake Hill Road in the Town of Van Etten. A man told deputies a woman had aimed a handgun at him.

Investigators determined the incident began when the victim attempted to check a vehicle that was stopped in the middle of Langford Creek Road, blocking traffic. Deputies say that when the man approached the car, the driver—identified as 39-year-old Stephanie A. Swartwood—allegedly pointed a pistol in his direction, leaving the victim alarmed. Authorities later found several imitation pistols inside the vehicle.

Swartwood was arrested and charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, a Class D felony, and menacing in the second degree, a Class A misdemeanor. She was arraigned in the Town of Horseheads Court, released on her own recognizance, and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Van Etten Court at a later date.

The Sheriff’s Office stated that the New York State Police and Chemung County Probation Department assisted in the investigation.
