Weathersfield, VT – A 56-year-old Weathersfield man was arrested following an alleged home invasion, assault and armed standoff that spanned several days in Windsor County.

According to the Windsor County Sheriffโ€™s Department, deputies responded around 1:45 a.m. Tuesday to a home on Thrasher Road after receiving a report of an intruder. The victim told officers the suspect, later identified as Walter Douglas Wilkins, had entered without permission and assaulted them. Authorities said Wilkins allegedly committed kidnapping, aggravated assault, burglary, assault and robbery, and was also prohibited from possessing firearms.

On Thursday afternoon, an arrest warrant was issued for Wilkins. Sheriff Palmer located him at a home on Wheeler Camp Road in Weathersfield around 4:30 p.m., where Wilkins allegedly barricaded himself and threatened harm to both himself and officers. Deputies from Windsor County and the Springfield Police Department responded, later requesting support from Rutland Police and Vermont State Police. After negotiations failed, the Vermont State Police Crisis Negotiation Unit and Tactical Services Unit (SWAT) moved in. Wilkins was taken into custody at about 9:30 p.m.

Authorities said Wilkins was transported to the Springfield Police Department, where he was processed and ordered held without bail. He is scheduled to appear in Windsor County Court on Tuesday, Sept. 2, at 12:30 p.m.

The Windsor County Sheriffโ€™s Department thanked multiple agencies, including Springfield, Windsor and Rutland police, Vermont State Police, local fire departments and Golden Cross Ambulance for their assistance.
