Oklahoma City, OK – A routine traffic stop in rural Oklahoma resulted in a major drug seizure after state troopers allegedly uncovered nearly 50 pounds of fentanyl hidden inside a vehicle being hauled on a trailer.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the stop occurred Friday on Interstate 40 when troopers pulled over a car hauler for following another vehicle too closely. During the stop, troopers reportedly observed suspicious behavior, obtained consent to search the vehicle, and discovered 49.55 pounds of illicit fentanyl concealed inside a hidden compartment of one of the transported cars.

Authorities said the amount of fentanyl seized is enough to produce over 11 million potentially lethal doses. Just 2 milligrams of the synthetic opioid, which is estimated to be 50 times stronger than heroin, can be deadly. Officials stressed the danger posed by such quantities, noting it represents nearly three lethal doses for every man, woman and child in Oklahoma.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol stated that details of the seizure were intentionally withheld to avoid providing information that could aid criminal organizations. However, they emphasized that removing the fentanyl from circulation potentially saved thousands of lives.

OHP officials credited the vigilance of their troopers for preventing the drugs from reaching communities across the state. The investigation remains ongoing, and no additional details regarding suspects or arrests were immediately released.
