Manhattan, IL – Residents are being warned about a new scam involving fraudulent traffic violation notices sent via email. The Village of Manhattan Police Department issued an alert after a local official received a fake citation demanding payment.

According to police, the scam email falsely claims the recipient has been cited for speeding and must pay within 72 hours through an online payment system called “EasyPay Center.” The email also includes a link to dispute the citation via a “SecureMail” system, both of which are fraudulent.

Authorities urge residents not to click on any links or provide personal information. Official traffic citations are typically issued by local law enforcement or government agencies, not through unsolicited emails.

If you receive a suspicious notice, police advise verifying its legitimacy directly with local authorities. Anyone who has fallen victim to the scam should report it to law enforcement immediately.

For assistance, residents can contact the Village of Manhattan Police Department or their local law enforcement agency.
