SPRINGFIELD, IL – Throughout the first quarter of 2024, the Illinois State Police (ISP) has made significant strides in curbing vehicle theft and hijackings across the state, with a total of 274 vehicles recovered. This initiative, supported by a substantial $10 million grant from the Illinois Secretary of State’s Vehicle Hijacking and Motor Vehicle Theft Prevention and Insurance Verification Council, showcases ISP’s enhanced focus on this pervasive issue.
ISP Director Brendan F. Kelly emphasized the use of a multi-pronged strategy involving increased patrols, air support, and detailed investigations, alongside forensic services to tackle the challenge.
“Illinois State Police uses a multi-pronged approach, including increased patrol, air operations support, investigations, and forensic services to combat vehicle hijackings and thefts,” Kelly stated.“ISP will continue to dedicate resources to stop violence on Illinois expressways and interstates.”
Key operations this quarter included the recovery of a stolen Nissan on I-94 in January, with two suspects arrested and firearms recovered. In February, an aggravated vehicular hijacking involving a Dodge on I-57 led to another swift arrest and the recovery of additional firearms. Another significant incident in March involved a stolen Jeep in Chicago Heights, culminating in three arrests and the recovery of a specially modified firearm.
These actions underscore ISP’s commitment to enhancing highway safety and reducing the impact of vehicle-related crimes through vigilant enforcement and strategic interventions.
