Plainfield, IL – A peaceful Monday evening picnic at Lake Renwick Preserve in Plainfield turned tragic when a father allegedly shot his 19-year-old son.
The incident occurred at the Turtle Lake Access area, drawing immediate response from local law enforcement and emergency services. According to the Forest Preserve District of Will County police, the call came in at approximately 7:50 p.m. on Monday. Will County Sheriff’s Police were the first responders, discovering the young man critically injured near a picnic shelter. He was promptly transported to Ascension St. Joseph Hospital in Joliet by the Plainfield Fire Protection District, but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
The 56-year-old father was taken into custody at the scene. Forest Preserve Police Chief Tracy Chapman stated that the shooting appears to be an isolated domestic incident, with no ongoing threat to the public. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday, May 1, by the Will County Coroner’s Office.
As of Tuesday morning, no charges have been filed, though the case remains under the review of the Will County State’s Attorney’s office. The investigation is ongoing, supported by multiple law enforcement agencies including the Will-Grundy Major Crimes Task Force, Plainfield Police, and Romeoville Police.
