Whitehorse, YT – A return of winter conditions is set to impact Whitehorse through early next week, bringing snow, gusty winds, and severe wind chills as low as -16°C.

According to Environment Canada, snow is expected to begin Monday, March 31, with a 60 percent chance of flurries continuing into Tuesday, April 1. Wind chill values could drop to -14°C Monday morning and plummet to -16°C Tuesday night, making outdoor exposure risky without proper precautions.

The weather shift follows several days of relatively mild temperatures, including a high of 3°C on Thursday, March 27. However, wind gusts reaching 50 km/h from the south are forecast to persist into the weekend, intensifying the chill factor across the region.

Residents should prepare for reduced visibility during snowfall and consider limiting travel during peak flurry periods. Layered clothing and covering exposed skin is advised to prevent cold-related injuries. No formal alerts are in effect as of Thursday morning, but conditions may shift quickly.

Historically, late-season snow and cold are not uncommon in Yukon, though this extended cold snap stands out for its duration and fluctuating temperatures. Daytime highs are expected to remain near 2°C through Wednesday, with overnight lows between -6°C and -16°C.
