Cheyenne, WY – A powerful winter storm is set to bring heavy snowfall and strong winds to Wyoming’s mountain regions. Starting tonight, parts of the Sierra Madre and Snowy Range could see accumulations between 10 and 16 inches of snow, with gusts reaching 60 mph.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a Winter Storm Warning from 8 p.m. Friday through 11 p.m. Saturday. According to the NWS, north- and west-facing slopes above 8,500 feet are likely to experience the heaviest snow. The combination of snowfall and high winds could create life-threatening conditions for outdoor enthusiasts and travelers.

The NWS cautions that hikers and snowmobilers may face severe disorientation in whiteout conditions. Frostbite and hypothermia can develop quickly for anyone exposed to the extreme cold. Motorists should avoid unnecessary travel as roads could become impassable due to snowdrifts and ice.

Residents are urged to prepare by stocking emergency supplies, including flashlights, food, and water. Travelers should carry extra supplies in their vehicles and monitor road conditions by dialing 511.

Local authorities also advise avoiding outdoor recreation during the storm. Those venturing into affected areas should be equipped with proper winter gear and emergency communication tools.

The storm is expected to taper off late Saturday evening, though residual impacts may linger through Sunday. Stay updated with the latest weather developments as conditions may change rapidly.
