Cheyenne, WY – A powerful winter storm is bringing heavy snow and high winds to the Sierra Madre and Snowy Ranges, creating dangerous conditions for travelers and outdoor enthusiasts through Saturday morning.

According to the National Weather Service, the region is under a Winter Weather Advisory until early Friday morning, with a Winter Storm Warning set to take effect at 11 a.m. and lasting until 5 a.m. Saturday. Snowfall totals in the Sierra Madre Range are expected to reach 15 inches, with gusts up to 55 mph reducing visibility and causing drifting snow.

Travelers on nearby roads, including portions of Wyoming’s I-80, should prepare for hazardous conditions. If driving, carry essential supplies such as food, water, and blankets in case of emergencies. Outdoor activities like hiking or snowmobiling are strongly discouraged, as frostbite and hypothermia risks increase in these extreme conditions.

For the Snowy Range, snow accumulation is expected to range between 6 and 12 inches by Saturday morning, with winds gusting as high as 70 mph. Low visibility and blowing snow could disorient outdoor recreationists, making it critical to stay updated on weather alerts.

The storm will taper off by Saturday afternoon, but cold temperatures will persist through the weekend, with lows in the single digits and wind chills below zero. Officials advise checking the latest road conditions by calling 511 or visiting wyoroad.info before traveling.

Stay tuned for updates as conditions develop.
