Cheyenne, WY – As Arctic air and heavy snow grip much of the state in the coming months, officials are warning drivers in Cheyenne, Casper, and Jackson to use extreme caution on bridges and overpasses freezing well before main roadways.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), bridges freeze first because they’re surrounded by cold air above and below, which allows heat to escape more quickly. “Bridges can turn icy in minutes, even when nearby pavement remains wet,” the NWS said Friday. “Combine that with strong winds, and conditions can deteriorate fast.”

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) pretreats major routes including I-25, I-80, and US-191, but warns that persistent snow and high winds may cause rapid re-freezing. Crews focus on mountain passes, elevated spans, and wind-prone areas known for black ice.

Motorists are urged to reduce speed before bridges, avoid sudden braking or lane changes, and maintain safe following distances. Officials say even a thin glaze of frost can lead to immediate loss of traction, particularly in high-elevation areas.
