Rock Springs, Wyoming – Strong winds and isolated thunderstorms may hit parts of southwestern Wyoming Tuesday afternoon, threatening travel along I-80 near Rock Springs and Green River.

According to the National Weather Service in Riverton, storms are most likely between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tuesday in Sweetwater County. Gusty outflow winds between 40 to 50 mph will be the main concern. The storm threat is part of a broader pattern of summer instability expected to affect central and western Wyoming throughout the week.

Motorists should be alert to sudden wind shifts on I-80, especially in exposed areas near Flaming Gorge and the Green River basin. These winds could down tree limbs or briefly impact high-profile vehicles. Locals are advised to secure loose outdoor items, charge devices ahead of time, and delay travel if storms develop nearby.

Thunderstorm chances continue each afternoon through Saturday, particularly across the northern half of the state. While widespread severe weather is not expected, brief lightning, wind gusts, and localized downpours are possible.

Spotter activation is not anticipated, but residents are encouraged to monitor the latest updates from NWS Riverton and be weather-aware during peak afternoon hours.
