Cheyenne, Wyoming – Strong thunderstorms packing large hail and damaging winds could sweep through southeast Wyoming and western Nebraska Sunday afternoon, with peak intensity expected between 3 and 9 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) is in place across areas including Cheyenne, Torrington, Scottsbluff, and Kimball. The primary threats include hail up to 2 inches in diameter and wind gusts over 58 mph, with an isolated tornado not ruled out. The outlook was issued at 5:03 a.m. MDT Sunday.

Cities such as Sidney, NE and Wheatland, WY may see scattered severe thunderstorms capable of damaging rooftops, vehicles, and power lines. Travel along I-80 and US-85 could be impacted during the evening commute. Residents are advised to secure outdoor objects, charge devices, and monitor NOAA weather alerts for updates.

The last comparable July storm brought similar hail damage to Laramie County in 2022. Today’s threat, while scattered, includes a potential for brief tornadoes, especially near the WY-NE border.

Storms are expected to weaken after 9 p.m., but more alerts may be issued if new cells develop into the evening hours.
