Cheyenne, WY – Fires could spread out of control within minutes across southeast Wyoming today as critical fire weather conditions intensify, with stronger winds expected by Monday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, Red Flag Warnings are in effect through 9 p.m. Monday for much of the region outside the mountains. Gusty west winds, low humidity, and record to near-record warmth are combining to create dangerous fire conditions, especially along the I-25 corridor from Cheyenne to Wheatland.
Wind gusts are expected to strengthen Monday, increasing the risk of rapid fire growth in dry grasslands and open areas. Locations including Cheyenne, Laramie, and Torrington face the highest threat, where even small sparks can quickly become fast-moving fires.
Adding to the concern, isolated evening showers may produce lightning and erratic wind gusts with little rainfall, increasing the chance of new fire starts without meaningful moisture.
Residents should avoid outdoor burning, secure equipment that may spark, and remain alert for rapidly changing conditions. Driving on dry grass and improper cigarette disposal should also be avoided.
A cold front arriving Monday night is expected to reduce fire danger, but until then, critical conditions remain in place and additional warnings may be issued.
