South Dakota, WY – A heavy winter storm continues to affect the Northern Black Hills and surrounding regions, bringing dangerous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), snow accumulations will range from 10 to 18 inches in areas like Lead, Deadwood, and Cheyenne Crossing. Other parts of the Black Hills, including Four Corners and Sundance, may see 4 to 10 inches of snow. Strong winds reaching up to 40 mph are causing blowing snow, significantly reducing visibility.
A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through 5 p.m. MST Monday. Additional snowfall will exacerbate already slick and hazardous roadways, especially on bridges and overpasses. Travel is expected to be very difficult, with local authorities urging residents to avoid unnecessary trips.
In the Northern Foothills, including Spearfish and Whitewood, 3 to 8 inches of snow are anticipated. Winds in these areas could gust up to 50 mph, creating dangerous conditions for drivers. Emergency preparedness is critical, and the NWS advises keeping a flashlight, food, and water in vehicles for emergencies.
The storm’s impacts are widespread, with blowing snow causing further visibility issues and road closures. Residents are encouraged to monitor weather updates and call 511 for road conditions before heading out.
This significant weather event underscores the importance of caution during severe winter conditions. Stay updated with the latest weather alerts and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.
