La Crosse, WI – A significant winter storm is set to impact portions of southeast Minnesota and central, southwest, and west-central Wisconsin overnight into Wednesday, bringing heavy snowfall and strong winds that could create hazardous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, ongoing rain will transition to snow beginning around 11 p.m. Tuesday in Rochester, MN, and around 5 a.m. Wednesday in La Crosse, WI. Snowfall rates could reach 1 to 2 inches per hour during the heaviest bands. A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from midnight Tuesday through 6 p.m. Wednesday for affected areas.

Total snowfall accumulations are expected to range between 4 and 8 inches, with winds gusting as high as 45 mph. Blizzard conditions could develop in areas west of the Mississippi River due to the strong winds, significantly reducing visibility.

The storm is expected to make the Wednesday morning and evening commutes treacherous, with slippery roads and possible downed tree branches due to gusty winds. Cities including La Crosse, Black River Falls, Sparta, Tomah, and Medford will be among those experiencing the most significant impacts.

Officials advise residents to avoid unnecessary travel and to carry emergency supplies, including a flashlight, food, and water, if travel is required. For real-time road conditions, residents can visit 511wi.gov in Wisconsin and 511mn.org in Minnesota.
