Duluth, MN – A powerful winter storm continues to impact northern Wisconsin, bringing heavy snowfall, strong winds, and hazardous travel conditions. A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for several counties, with snowfall totals expected to reach up to 18 inches in some areas before the system moves out Wednesday evening.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Duluth, the hardest-hit areas include Ashland, Bayfield, and Iron Counties, where between 12 and 18 inches of snow is expected, especially in northern Iron County. Lighter, yet still significant, snowfall of 6 to 13 inches is forecast for other parts of Ashland County, while Douglas, Burnett, Washburn, Price, and Sawyer Counties can expect 3 to 6 inches of accumulation.
Winds gusting up to 45 mph will cause blowing snow and whiteout conditions, especially along Highway 2 and other major routes. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) warns that travel may be treacherous and potentially life-threatening, with visibility dropping below 1/4 mile at times.
In addition to heavy snow, some areas may see light freezing rain, creating slick roadways. The storm is expected to impact both the Wednesday morning and evening commutes.
Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel. Those who must drive should carry emergency supplies, including a flashlight, food, and water. For the latest road conditions, visit 511wi.gov.
The storm is expected to taper off by Wednesday evening, though strong winds and drifting snow may continue to pose challenges into Thursday.
