Milwaukee, Wisconsin – Spring break travelers heading into Wisconsin could face dangerous cold with single-digit temperatures and subzero wind chills as Arctic air settles across the western Great Lakes between March 16 and March 20.

Early commuters in the Milwaukee area may experience wind chills falling below 0°F, especially during the morning hours when gusty winds blow off Lake Michigan and combine with the cold air mass.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a large stretch of the eastern United States—from Minnesota down to East Texas and eastward to the Atlantic coast—shows a 60–70% probability of below-normal temperatures during that timeframe. The Upper Midwest sits within the core of this colder pattern.

Cities including Milwaukee, Racine, and Kenosha could see overnight temperatures dropping into the single digits, while gusty lake winds may push wind chills into subzero territory before sunrise.

Daytime highs may struggle to climb out of the teens and 20s, running well below typical mid-March averages.

Drivers traveling along Interstate 94, Interstate 43, and Interstate 41 should watch for icy patches and reduced visibility during occasional snow showers or blowing snow near the lakeshore.

Pedestrians near the Milwaukee Riverwalk, downtown lakefront, and the Hoan Bridge corridor should dress in full winter layers, as exposed skin could feel the effects of subzero wind chills quickly.

The colder pattern may persist through March 20, and additional advisories could follow if subzero wind chills continue across southeast Wisconsin during the opening week of spring.
