La Crosse, Wisconsin – Smoke and poor air quality will continue to impact western and central Wisconsin through midday Wednesday, posing health risks for sensitive groups and commuters.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, a PM2.5 air quality advisory remains in effect until at least noon Wednesday for La Crosse, Monroe, Vernon, Jackson, and surrounding counties. Smoke from Canadian wildfires has moved in from the northwest, triggering “Unhealthy” air readings and a hazy sky across the region.

Wednesday will bring patchy smoke in the morning, followed by mostly sunny skies with a high near 77°F in La Crosse. Calm winds and poor dispersion will allow pollutants to linger, especially in valleys and urban areas. Drivers on Highway 53 and I-90 may notice reduced visibility and should keep windows closed.

Residents with asthma, heart conditions, or respiratory sensitivities are urged to avoid outdoor activity and use air purifiers indoors. Keep medication close and monitor symptoms. All residents are advised to limit prolonged exertion outdoors during peak smoke hours, especially before noon.

Smoke will begin to clear by Wednesday evening, with more seasonal air expected Thursday. However, isolated thunderstorms could return Thursday night into Friday. The National Weather Service reports no severe weather threat but notes a chance for brief heavy rain.
