La Crosse, Wisconsin – Thunderstorms with gusty winds and bursts of heavy rain could sweep into the La Crosse region by Wednesday night, triggering potential travel delays and safety concerns through the end of the workweek.

According to the National Weather Service, storms are likely to begin late Wednesday, with showers starting as early as 10 a.m. before ramping up into thunderstorms between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m. Thursday. Some rainfall may exceed a quarter inch, and isolated storms could bring strong gusts and minor flooding. Winds could reach up to 25 mph Thursday afternoon.

The main concern: fast-developing storms along roadways like US-53 and WI-16, where wet pavement and reduced visibility could impact morning and evening commutes Thursday and Friday. Residents should charge phones, check sump pumps, and avoid unnecessary driving during storm periods.

Thursday remains unstable with more rain and scattered storms likely throughout the day. By Friday, the system starts to exit the area, but a chance of additional thunderstorms persists with winds gusting up to 23 mph. Cooler air moves in briefly Friday night.

Looking ahead, weekend spring conditions return. Saturday will bring drier skies with a high near 62°F, and Sunday looks warmer with highs near 66°F and only a slight chance of rain. Another round of rain returns Monday afternoon.
