La Crosse, WI — Gusty southwest winds and low humidity have prompted an elevated fire risk warning for western Wisconsin on Wednesday. The National Weather Service issued the alert for the region, warning that conditions are ripe for potential fires, especially in areas west of the Mississippi River.

According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, strong winds reaching up to 35 mph and humidity levels between 20% and 25% could cause fires to spread quickly. The warning covers the period between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., when these conditions will be most severe.

Farmers harvesting their crops are particularly at risk, as sparks from machinery could ignite dry fields. The National Weather Service urges farmers and others engaged in outdoor activities to exercise caution and adhere to any local burning bans.

Local authorities are asking residents to report any signs of fire immediately to prevent widespread damage. The elevated fire risk will remain in effect until weather conditions improve.
