La Crosse, WI – A blast of Arctic air is expected to hit Wisconsin starting Thursday, plunging temperatures and making Thanksgiving travel challenging. The National Weather Service warns that wind chills could fall below zero Friday through Sunday, marking the coldest stretch since March.
According to the NWS La Crosse office, Thanksgiving Day will begin with highs near 28°F but will quickly dip as northwest winds intensify. By Friday morning, wind chills will plummet into the single digits, with highs struggling to reach 18°F. Saturday and Sunday will see lows near 4°F, with brisk winds making it feel even colder.
Holiday travelers should prepare for icy conditions on major routes, including I-90, especially during the overnight hours when temperatures will be at their lowest. Officials advise packing winter survival kits, including blankets, water, and food, and checking tire conditions before heading out.
Snow chances remain minimal through Thanksgiving, but light accumulations are possible Wednesday evening in northern areas like Taylor County. These light snowfalls could cause slippery spots on bridges and overpasses, especially in the morning hours.
Looking further into the week, Tuesday will bring seasonable conditions with sunny skies and highs near 34°F. However, a sharp temperature drop will begin Wednesday afternoon as a cold front moves through.
Residents are urged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service and limit time outdoors during the weekend due to frostbite risks from prolonged exposure. Make sure to finalize outdoor holiday preparations by Tuesday before the deep freeze sets in.
