Green Bay, Wisconsin – Strong southerly winds will churn up dangerous conditions along Wisconsin’s Lake Michigan shoreline through Tuesday, with waves reaching up to 7 feet and powerful rip currents threatening swimmers.
According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, a High Swim Risk is in effect for beaches in Door, Kewaunee, and Manitowoc counties through late Tuesday as breezy winds fuel breaking waves and hazardous currents. Weak swimmers are urged to stay out of the water.
While weather on Monday remains mostly sunny and warm, these deceptively pleasant conditions mask a serious danger. Waves between 4 and 7 feet are expected to create turbulent surf and structural currents near piers, which are especially dangerous.
Lifeguards may not be present on many local beaches, so swimmers are advised to avoid entering the water. Parents should keep children close and away from the shoreline. “Flip, float, and follow” techniques can help in emergencies, but prevention is key.
Lakeshore air temperatures will rise into the low-to-mid 70s, drawing crowds, but residents are urged to treat this as a serious water safety event.
Warnings remain in effect through Tuesday evening, and additional swim advisories may be issued if windy conditions persist.
