Madison, Wis. – Smoke drifting south from Canadian wildfires will create unhealthy air across southern Wisconsin starting early Friday, prompting an Air Quality Advisory through 6 a.m. Saturday. People with heart or lung conditions are urged to limit time outdoors.
According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee, the smoke will mix down to the surface after sunrise Friday, significantly reducing air quality in much of the state. The advisory includes major cities such as Milwaukee, Madison, and Janesville, where air may reach levels considered “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups.”
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources recommends vulnerable individuals, including children, seniors, and people with asthma or heart disease, keep outdoor activity brief and avoid strenuous exercise. Symptoms may include coughing, shortness of breath, and throat irritation.
Counties shaded in orange on the advisory map are expected to see the greatest impact, while western portions of the state may experience moderate air quality.
Air quality is expected to improve gradually by Saturday morning, but officials warn additional smoke incursions are possible this weekend. Updates will be issued if conditions worsen.
