Nashville, TN – Drivers across Tennessee should prepare for hazardous conditions this weekend as a winter storm is forecast to bring a mix of rain, ice, and snow along the I-40 corridor starting Sunday morning. Forecasters warn that freezing rain and icy patches could make travel dangerous, particularly during early morning hours.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Nashville, precipitation is expected to begin as light snow Sunday morning before transitioning to a wintry mix and eventually freezing rain. Temperatures will rise into the upper 40s by the afternoon, turning most precipitation to rain. However, areas north of I-40 could experience prolonged freezing rain, increasing the likelihood of slick roads and dangerous driving conditions.

Sunday night will bring colder air, with temperatures dropping below freezing, potentially creating icy conditions for Monday morning commuters. Winds gusting up to 20 mph may worsen visibility and road conditions.

The NWS advises residents to monitor updates as the storm approaches. Travel plans should be adjusted, and essential supplies stocked. If driving is unavoidable, exercise extreme caution, particularly on bridges and overpasses, where ice forms quickly.

The weekend forecast leading up to the storm remains clear, with sunny skies and highs near 40°F on Friday and Saturday. Nighttime lows will dip into the 20s.

Looking ahead, colder temperatures are expected to persist through next week, with highs struggling to reach 35°F by Monday.

Residents should follow local weather updates and use tools like the Tennessee Department of Transportation’s road conditions map to stay informed.
