Morehead City, NC – Residents in eastern North Carolina are bracing for significant snowfall and dangerous travel conditions through Wednesday morning. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 5 p.m. today until 7 a.m. Wednesday for Carteret, Craven, Pamlico, Tyrrell, and Hyde counties, including the Outer Banks.
According to the National Weather Service, 6 to 8 inches of snow are forecast, with the heaviest accumulation occurring east of Highway 17. Hazardous conditions will impact both Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes. Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, are expected to become icy, slick, and dangerous. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel.
Snowfall is predicted to begin tonight after 10 p.m. as temperatures drop to 24°F. Gusty winds of up to 23 mph will contribute to reduced visibility and wind chills as low as 10°F. Commuters and travelers should stay informed of road conditions by calling 511 and prepare emergency supplies if travel is unavoidable.
The winter storm is part of a broader cold snap, with very cold wind chills persisting through Wednesday morning. Temperatures will reach a high of 33°F Wednesday before skies clear, but roads may remain hazardous.
Looking ahead, Thursday brings a slight chance of freezing rain early, followed by milder conditions into Friday, with highs reaching 42°F. Overnight lows will remain near or below freezing, prolonging icy conditions on untreated surfaces.
Residents should dress warmly, limit time outdoors, and check for updates from local authorities. For real-time weather alerts and safety tips, visit the National Weather Service website or follow their social media accounts.
