Indianapolis, IN – Central Indiana faces potential travel disruptions this Thanksgiving week as a storm system tracks toward the Midwest. Rain, freezing temperatures, and possible snow could make roadways hazardous, especially along I-70. Forecasters are urging residents to stay updated and prepare for changing travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), confidence is increasing in a storm system expected to arrive late Wednesday and persist into Thanksgiving Day. The system could take a northern path, bringing a mix of rain and snow to the region, or a southern route, which would leave the area mostly dry. Current models favor the northern track, which increases the likelihood of icy roads and travel delays across Indianapolis and surrounding areas.
Today will see a high of 57°F with rain tapering off by the afternoon. By tonight, temperatures will drop to 32°F under cloudy skies, setting up a colder Tuesday. Tuesday will be partly sunny with a high near 43°F, but conditions will shift Wednesday with a 50% chance of rain during the day and rain turning to snow overnight. Thanksgiving Day could bring additional light rain or snow, with highs reaching only 41°F.
Residents should prepare for potential slick roads on Thursday morning and consider adjusting travel plans if weather conditions worsen. Snowfall amounts remain uncertain but could accumulate in some areas if temperatures fall below freezing overnight.
Drivers should monitor local forecasts, especially if traveling along major routes like I-70 and I-65. Officials recommend allowing extra time for trips and packing emergency supplies in case of delays.
