Albuquerque, NM – A powerful arctic front is set to bring frigid temperatures and snow to New Mexico starting Friday night. The National Weather Service warns of sub-freezing conditions lasting through midweek, with wind chills plunging to dangerous levels.
According to the National Weather Service, eastern New Mexico could see temperatures drop below freezing for three to four days. Light snow is forecasted, ranging from a dusting to 2 inches, with 2 to 5 inches possible in far northeastern areas. Highways, including portions of I-25 and I-40, may experience icy patches and reduced visibility.
Residents are urged to prepare by securing homes and vehicles, bringing pets indoors, and stocking essential supplies. Frostbite and hypothermia risks will increase, especially with wind chills as low as -10°F in some areas. Ensure heating systems are working properly and generators are ventilated if used.
Looking ahead, Friday will be mostly sunny with a high near 56°F in Albuquerque, but temperatures will sharply drop overnight. Saturday and Sunday are expected to be colder, with highs in the low 40s and nighttime lows near 12°F. Snow showers may return on Monday, with highs struggling to reach 38°F.
Drivers should exercise caution, especially during snow and ice conditions this weekend. Keep an emergency kit in vehicles and avoid unnecessary travel. For updates, follow the National Weather Service and local authorities.
