Central Illinois – Residents of Central Illinois should prepare for frigid temperatures and hazardous conditions this week, as a cold front ushers in bitter wind chills and the potential for snow by midweek. Wind chills as low as -10 degrees are forecast for Wednesday, with more snow showers expected on Friday.
According to the National Weather Service, the cold front will arrive late Tuesday, bringing daytime highs in the 30s and overnight lows dipping into the single digits. By Wednesday night, wind chills are expected to plummet to dangerous levels, with gusts reaching 30 mph. Residents are urged to bundle up and limit outdoor exposure to avoid frostbite and hypothermia.
Snow showers are likely to develop Wednesday afternoon, although accumulations are expected to be minor. Another system moving through on Friday could bring a wintry mix during the day, transitioning to rain by evening. Travelers should exercise caution on local roadways, including I-72 and I-57, where slippery conditions may occur.
The extended forecast offers little relief from the cold. Highs on Thursday will hover in the teens, while nighttime lows remain in the single digits. Friday will see slightly milder conditions, with highs in the 30s and lows around 31 degrees.
Residents should stay informed of weather updates throughout the week and take steps to prepare for the cold, including insulating homes and checking on vulnerable neighbors.
