Des Moines, IA – Central and southern Iowa are under a Winter Weather Advisory for Thursday, with heavy snow expected during the morning commute.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Des Moines predicts snowfall totals between 2-4 inches in central Iowa, including Des Moines, Ames, and surrounding areas. The heaviest accumulation is forecast from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m., potentially disrupting travel.

According to the NWS, snow will begin early Thursday morning in western Iowa and move eastward, tapering off by the afternoon. Road conditions are expected to worsen, with reduced visibility and slick surfaces. Commuters are advised to plan extra travel time and drive cautiously.

Areas further north and south could see lighter accumulations, with 0.1-2 inches forecast for Mason City and Creston. Central Iowa remains the most affected region.
