La Crosse, WI – A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for much of southwestern Wisconsin today, with freezing rain and snow expected to create treacherous travel conditions, especially along Interstate 90. The National Weather Service warns that ice accumulations could reach up to two-tenths of an inch, making roads, sidewalks, and bridges dangerously slick.

The advisory, in effect from 6 a.m. to midnight, affects La Crosse, Vernon, Crawford, and Grant counties. Snow will likely transition to freezing rain by late morning, continuing into the afternoon. Winds gusting up to 20 mph may worsen driving conditions and could lead to minor power outages as ice builds up on power lines and tree branches. Motorists are urged to delay travel if possible and use extreme caution if they must venture out.

According to the National Weather Service, untreated roads, overpasses, and sidewalks will freeze quickly, creating hazardous conditions. “Be prepared for slippery roads,” the advisory warns, adding that drivers should check for updated road conditions at 511wi.gov before heading out.

The storm is expected to weaken overnight, with precipitation tapering off before midnight. However, patchy fog could develop into early Sunday morning, reducing visibility. Sunday’s forecast includes cloudy skies with highs near 39°F and calm winds, offering a brief respite before another system brings a slight chance of rain or snow Monday.

By midweek, temperatures are predicted to dip further, with daytime highs in the mid-20s. Residents should remain alert to changing weather conditions and continue to exercise caution on roads throughout the week.

Stay safe by limiting unnecessary travel, monitoring weather updates, and preparing for potential delays or power disruptions.
