Newport, NC – Winter weather is set to impact the region overnight into Thursday morning, bringing a mix of snow and freezing rain.
A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for Newport and surrounding areas, including Swansboro, Emerald Isle, and Morehead City, effective from 7 PM tonight through 10 AM Thursday. Drivers should be prepared for hazardous road conditions, including slippery surfaces due to mixed precipitation.
According to the National Weather Service, the region will experience freezing rain and light snow accumulation. While total snow amounts are expected to be minimal, ice accumulations up to one-tenth of an inch could make travel dangerous. The advisory covers the coastal Onslow and Carteret counties, with rain expected to turn into freezing rain late tonight.
Travelers should exercise caution as road conditions could worsen overnight. Plan extra time for your Thursday morning commute, as icy patches could impact major roads like Highway 24 and U.S. Route 70.
By Friday, conditions will improve with clear skies, though temperatures will remain chilly, with wind chills expected in the single digits. Plan for a significant warming trend this weekend, bringing more comfortable temperatures by Saturday. Be sure to stay tuned for updates on local weather conditions as the storm passes.
