Newport, NC – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for eastern North Carolina, including Pitt and Carteret counties, as freezing rain and sleet continue overnight into Saturday morning. Local traffic cams, including along NC 11 Bypass at US 264, show icy conditions forming on roads.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), temperatures will hover near freezing through the night, creating slick roads and potentially hazardous travel conditions. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for possible freezing rain accumulations of up to 0.1 inches in some areas. Drivers who must travel should use extreme caution and ensure vehicles are equipped for winter weather.
Saturday will see conditions improving, with rain likely before 7 a.m., followed by clearing skies and a high of 46°F. Northwest winds of up to 23 mph could lead to additional wind chill. Saturday night will remain cold, with a low of 25°F and calm winds.
Sunday promises sunny skies and a high near 45°F, providing a much-needed respite from icy conditions. The clear weather is expected to extend into Monday, with highs nearing 50°F.
Residents should continue to monitor forecasts, as freezing temperatures are predicted for midweek, with apparent temperatures dipping into the teens. The NWS advises staying updated through local alerts and ensuring outdoor pets have adequate shelter.
