Northern Indiana, IN – Residents across northern Indiana and southwest Michigan should prepare for slippery roads Monday as freezing rain is expected to create hazardous travel conditions. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the region, effective from 7 a.m. EST to 4 p.m. EST Monday.

According to the advisory, freezing rain may lead to ice accumulations of up to one-tenth of an inch, particularly in southern Michigan. Areas such as Elkhart, LaGrange, and Steuben counties in Indiana, along with Cass, St. Joseph, and Branch counties in Michigan, are expected to be most affected.

Forecasters warn that even a light glaze of ice can make roads dangerously slick. Commuters should anticipate delays during the Monday morning rush hour and use extra caution while traveling. The freezing rain will likely be most prolonged in southern Michigan, while parts of northwest Indiana may see conditions transition to rain by noon.

Local road agencies are preparing to treat major highways and intersections, but untreated surfaces such as sidewalks, parking lots, and secondary roads may remain icy through much of the day.

To stay safe, residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel during the advisory period. For those who must drive, keeping a safe distance from other vehicles and having an emergency kit on hand is recommended.

The latest road conditions can be accessed by calling 511 or visiting the Indiana Department of Transportation website. Drivers in Michigan should consult the Michigan Department of Transportation for updates.

This advisory serves as a timely reminder of the challenges winter weather brings. Stay proactive by checking forecasts, dressing appropriately for icy conditions, and keeping a close eye on local travel advisories.
