Morris, MN – A wintry mix of freezing rain and snow is creating hazardous travel conditions across western Minnesota Sunday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in the Twin Cities, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 p.m. CDT for Todd, Chippewa, Douglas, Lac Qui Parle, Pope, Stevens, Swift, and Yellow Medicine counties. Forecasters report that up to 3 inches of snow and a light glaze of ice may accumulate through midday.
Elevated surfaces across the region, including bridges and overpasses, are particularly susceptible to ice buildup. Cities such as Alexandria, Morris, Benson, and Montevideo are likely to experience slippery roads, reduced visibility, and slower commute times.
While areas farther southeast including Mankato and the southern Twin Cities metro saw warmer overnight temperatures that limited icing, central and western zones continue to see mixed precipitation with temperatures hovering near freezing.
Drivers are urged to reduce speed and check conditions by calling 511 or visiting 511mn.org. Officials recommend allowing extra travel time and maintaining safe distances between vehicles.
The weather system is expected to taper off by early afternoon, but lingering slick spots may persist into the evening, especially on untreated surfaces. This late-season event follows a generally mild March, making the icy conditions more disruptive than usual.
